Living with Whole Life Allegiance to Jesus
At six years old, standing beside my desk in first grade, I learned the word “allegiance” for the first time. Hand over heart, pledging loyalty to my country – it was my first encounter with the concept of giving my all to something greater than myself. Today, that childhood memory raises a profound question: if we can pledge allegiance to a flag, how much more should we give our complete allegiance to the King of the universe?
What Does It Mean to Live After the Resurrection?
Living on this side of Easter changes everything. The resurrection of Jesus isn’t just a historical event we celebrate once a year – it’s the foundation that transforms how we live every single day. When Christ walked out of that grave, He proved that everything He said was true, and that reality demands a response from us.
The question isn’t whether Jesus rose from the dead. The question is: what does His resurrection produce in the people who follow Him? The answer is found in understanding that we now have a new identity and a new allegiance.
Who Deserves Our Ultimate Allegiance?
Paul writes to the Colossians about Jesus with breathtaking clarity: “He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” – Colossians 1:15-17
Think about what this means. Jesus isn’t just a good teacher or moral example. He’s the Creator and sustainer of everything that exists. He could decide today that He’s done, and the entire universe would dissolve. Yet somehow, we often look everywhere else for authority in our lives.
The Authority Question
Here’s the bottom line question we all must answer: Who’s the boss of you? Who gets to have the final say in how you live, what decisions you make, and what direction you take your life?
We look to many places for authority – our parents, our boss, our favorite podcaster, our peer group. While it’s good to get input and influence from others, the question remains: who has the ultimate authority in your life?
Why Do We Struggle with Surrendering Everything?
The reality is that we can intellectually believe Jesus has all authority while practically living as if we’re still in charge. We can sing “All to Jesus I Surrender” on Sunday and then spend Monday through Saturday surrendering to everything except Jesus.
This isn’t about condemnation – it’s about honesty. None of us have figured out perfect surrender yet. We’re all works in progress, and God is still working in us.
The Validation Trap
Sometimes we trade Jesus’s authority for something as simple as validation from others. We make decisions based on what will get us approval rather than what aligns with God’s will. We share stories not to encourage others but to hear “Wow, you’re so spiritual.”
Everyone comes into this world looking for someone looking for them. If we don’t find that in Jesus, we’ll search for it everywhere else – often without even realizing it.
What Does Whole Life Allegiance Look Like?
Paul doesn’t just establish Jesus’s authority over creation – he also establishes His authority over the new creation, which is the church. Jesus is “the head of the body, the church. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in everything he might be preeminent.” – Colossians 1:18
Preeminent means superior, above all. Jesus doesn’t want to be first among many priorities in your life – He wants to be preeminent in everything.
The “If” Factor
Paul writes: “And you, who once were alienated and hostile in mind, doing evil deeds, he has now reconciled in his body of flesh by his death, in order to present you holy and blameless and above reproach before him, if indeed you continue in the faith, stable and steadfast, not shifting from the hope of the gospel.” – Colossians 1:21-23
That word “if” isn’t about earning God’s love – it’s about relationship. God has always called His people into relationship with Him. It’s not legalistic performance; it’s an invitation to lean in and surrender what we have to Him, trusting Him to do what we cannot do for ourselves.
How Do We Live This Out Practically?
Allegiance to Jesus sounds noble until it costs us something. It’s easy to sing about surrender until we’re asked to actually surrender our career security, our financial comfort, our need for approval, or our political identity.
Whole life allegiance means filtering the ordinary decisions of this week through one question: What does allegiance to Jesus look like here?
When Following Gets Hard
Following Jesus is both the most costly and the most rewarding decision you’ll ever make. It’s the most vulnerable thing you can do and simultaneously the safest place you can live.
Some of you have been fighting the same battles for decades. You’ve tried to overcome certain thoughts, feelings, or past realities over and over again. Here’s the beautiful truth: you don’t need to have one more try in you. You can’t dig deep enough to make it happen on your own. But you can lean in.
God hasn’t given up on you. As Paul writes in Philippians: “And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” – Philippians 1:6
Life Application
This week, ask yourself this question daily: “Jesus, what’s the next thing in my life that you’re asking me to surrender?” Don’t try to surrender everything at once – just focus on the next thing He’s highlighting.
Your allegiance isn’t just a Sunday declaration. It’s Monday with your coworker, Wednesday with your finances, Friday when the difficult phone call comes. It’s filtering every ordinary decision through the lens of what allegiance to Jesus looks like in that specific moment.
Consider these questions as you reflect on this message:
– Where am I looking for authority in my life other than Jesus?
– What am I trading for validation instead of living in the approval I already have in Christ?
– What’s the “next all” that God is asking me to surrender to Him?
– How can I practically live out Jesus’s preeminence in my daily decisions this week?
Remember, a gospel-centered life is shaped by whole life allegiance to Jesus. All means all, and that’s all. It’s the most challenging and rewarding way to live – because when we surrender everything to the One who gave everything for us, we discover the freedom and joy we were always meant to have.
