Who Are You Because Jesus is Alive?
After Easter Sunday, many of us wake up Monday morning feeling like nothing has changed. The same anxieties, concerns, and struggles remain. We wonder: if the resurrection changed everything, why does life still feel the same? The answer lies in understanding and living from the new identity that Jesus has already given us.
What Does It Mean to Live Gospel-Centered?
Living a gospel-centered life isn’t about adopting new beliefs or trying to become a better person through willpower. It’s about recognizing that you’ve been placed under the authority of a new King and given a completely new identity.
The gospel isn’t just good news about what Jesus did—it’s good news about what has already happened to you if you’re a follower of Christ. You’ve been brought into resurrection life, and your job is to open your eyes to this new reality and live in it.
Are You Living Under Adam or Jesus?
The apostle Paul places all humanity between two figures: Adam and Jesus. Adam represents the old world of sin, rebellion, death, and condemnation. Jesus is the head of the new humanity—the recreated world of life, obedience, and grace.
If you’ve never given your life to following Jesus, you remain a descendant of Adam, living in rebellion against God. This isn’t necessarily about being a “bad person”—even the best people you know, if they haven’t submitted to Jesus’ authority, are still in rebellion against God.
But if you’re a follower of Jesus, you are no longer “in Adam.” You’re now united to Christ with a completely new identity.
What Happened When You Died With Christ?
Romans 6:3-4 reveals a profound truth: “Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.”
The good news isn’t just that Jesus died for you—it’s that you died with Him. When you gave your life to Christ, your old self was crucified with Him on the cross. This isn’t metaphorical; it’s a spiritual reality that has already happened.
Sin’s Authority Has Been Broken
When Paul talks about sin, he’s not just referring to individual bad behaviors. Sin represents an entire system of rebellion against God—a pattern established from the beginning that keeps humanity in bondage to the attitude of “I want things my way, right away. I’m the king of me.”
Through Christ’s death and resurrection, sin’s legal claim over your life has been canceled. The whole compounding record of rebellion no longer has any right over you. You’ve been declared free from all claims that sin had against you.
How Do You Live as a Resurrected Person?
Romans 6:11 gives us the key: “So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.”
The word “consider” is an accounting term that means to continually run a thought through your mind. It’s not a one-time decision but an ongoing practice of remembering God’s evaluation of who you are.
You Have to Do the Math
Just like you have to practice math problems to be good at math, you have to practice running this truth through your mind: you are dead to sin and alive to God. If you don’t do this regularly, don’t be surprised when you fall back into old patterns.
Every morning, afternoon, and evening, you need to remind yourself of your true identity. You are not who you used to be. You’re not who you want to be yet, but you’re definitely not who you used to be—you are a new creation in Christ.
What Identity Are You Living From Today?
Many of us carry old narratives from childhood or past experiences that whisper lies: “You’re not enough,” “You’ll never change,” “You’re still the same person you always were.” These false identities compete with your resurrected identity.
Maybe your identity gets wrapped up in your job performance, your achievements, your status, or your title. But none of these things define who you are. Your identity is found in being a resurrected person in Christ.
Truth Moves From Head to Heart to Habits
Transformation happens when we intentionally put ourselves in the way of Jesus every single day. It’s not enough to have a big idea or good intentions—you must wake up Monday morning and do the work of following Jesus.
This means asking yourself daily: “What identity am I living from today?” Is it based on performance, achievement, or status? Or is it based on your resurrected life in Christ?
Life Application
This week, challenge yourself to ask one crucial question every morning: “What identity am I living from today?” Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal to you specifically what false identity you might be operating from—whether it’s performance-based, achievement-focused, or rooted in past wounds.
Then remind yourself of the truth: you are dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus. You have a resurrected identity that isn’t based on what you do, but on what Christ has already done for you.
– What old narratives or false identities do I need to replace with the truth of who I am in Christ?
– How can I practically “do the math” of my resurrected identity throughout each day?
– What would change in my daily life if I truly lived from my identity as a new creation rather than from my performance or achievements?
Remember: you don’t build this identity through your performance—it’s something that can only be given to you, and all you can do is accept it and live from it. You are a resurrected person called to live as such in an unresurrected world, and that makes all the difference.
